Managing projects or complex client transactions that deliver change is often a challenging time especially when responsibilities are taken on board in addition to the normal workload. This course will give you skills that can be used in a wide variety of situations to enable you to manage internal assignments or multifaceted legal transactions or cases (“project”).

This course focuses on the challenges of project managing these projects so that they are profitable or within budget, completed on time and to the standard required by the external or internal client. The course provides you with the knowledge, skills and techniques to manage a project effectively so that you and your team deliver an excellent client service, whilst also ensuring that the work is profitable for the firm. 

This course forms part of the series of courses on Operational Management and will help you to resolve these typical business problems:

• Providing a structured approach to managing large or small internal or external client related projects.
• A failure to look at projects strategically and anticipate risks and problems. 
• Not costing a legal project properly initially and/or the matter running over the fee and time estimates, so that it is not profitable work for the firm.
• Not dealing with the effect on the costs of a project when unexpected additional work arises.
• The inability to use IT to help you be effective and efficient in managing projects.
• Lack of communication and monitoring/control processes and skills to properly manage client expectations and team performance.
• Not knowing how to delegate work to provide a good quality service, develop the experience and skills of your team and ensure a profit for your firm. 
• The repetition of mistakes or the duplication of work because team members fail to share information and learn from previous projects.

This course on Successful Project Management will give you the opportunity to develop and hone your project management skills so that you successfully manage projects from the client’s, the firm’s, your own and your team’s perspective. It will provide you with the knowledge, skills and abilities to respond effectively, and in a controlled way, to whatever might happen during the project. 

By the end of this course you will be able to:

• Understand the benefits of project management to the client and to your firm and your role in managing a project.
• Develop a project plan covering the planning, implementation and post implementation phases.
• Develop the internal goals or external client’s instructions into aims and objectives and identify the scope of a project.
• Analyse the risks in order to anticipate problems and deal with them more easily.

• Use techniques to cost and plan a project properly (eg work breakdown schedules, Gantt charts, risk assessments and critical path analysis) so that:

• Effectively manage a project through the use of proper communication, leadership, control and co-ordination skills.
• Complete projects successfully and evaluate post completion what you have learnt and how to apply it to any projects in the future.
